30 Days of Gratitude

Gratitude-Jar-3

Have you heard of 30 days of gratitude? I have looked around on different blogs to see how this is done. Basically it is a series of things you are grateful for.  It takes you on a 30 day journey of what is important to you.  Some folks post a quote about thankfulness every day.  Some post their favorite scripture, pictures, whatever means a lot to them, that they want to thank the Lord up above for.  Kim at the writeshop has a wonderful blog about it.  There is even a Facebook page dedicated to this chalIenge.   Love this idea.  With November having the biggest gratitude holiday of the year, Thanksgiving, I thought this would be a wonderful month to try this out.  I am going to post, once a week, things I am so very grateful for.  I know this will be a blessing.  It will give me a chance to reflect & acknowledge God’s favor, that is in my life.  I encourage you to do this challenge.  Whether you post on your blog, write it in a journal, scratch it down on paper, or hold it all in your head- take time to be thankful to the Lord for one thing, each day, for 30 days.  I just know this will be a blessing!  Feel free to let me know what you are doing.   I would love to hear what you are thankful for.

Day one S__78C1I am so thankful for the Bible.  I have been in a wonderful Bible study with two sweet young ladies, for the past couple of weeks.  Also, our ladies group that meets every third Friday is great.  Sunday school, worship service, our church, none of this would be possible with out God’s word.  The Lord is working in mine & my family’s lives.  This is all through the Bible.  For that, I am thankful.

Day two

I should be washing clothes.

I should be washing clothes.

I am so thankful for this little blog right here.  God has blessed me so much with it.  I would never have met some of you without it.  I am proud of the friendships I have made through it.  It has been such a wonderful opportunity to reach out to others with it.  And with that some of you reach back in to me!!  That’s the best thing!!!  I love that this blog can be something fun & happy & maybe a thought provoking place.  I am so grateful for it!

Preparing For Winter in the South

big-vegetable-garden-lgFall is in the air, in northeast Mississippi.  It seems just like yesterday, we were complaining about the hot, humid, weather.  Now, it seems we may be getting a much needed break.  This time of the year puts me in mind of my grandmother & preparation.

You see, as I was growing up, both sets of my grandparents planted & grew gardens.  Me and my brother stayed with my Mama Boyce & Papa Clyde, (Daddy’s mama & daddy) while Mama & Daddy were at work.  This meant after school & summers were spent, doing whatever it was we could get away with, at their house on Leedy Hill. Papa Clyde & Mama Boyce always had a big garden every summer. We affectionately referred to it as the truck patch.  I never really knew why it was called a truck patch.  It wasn’t even close to a truck.  If anyone out there knows, please enlighten me.  Anyways, we worked in the garden all summer long.  We would get out in the hot morning sun & pick whatever it was that was in at the time.  We picked purple hull peas, squash, tomatoes, okra, corn, cucumbers, butter beans, green beans, pretty much anything you could think of.  Then, there were plums, apples, strawberries, mucadines, peaches, pears, all kinds of fruit trees, too. My brother can still tell you the exact whereabouts the pear tree was on the property.  I’m sure because he picked up many a pears off the ground, before they ruined.  Mama Boyce made sure little went to waste around there. We shelled peas & butter beans, snapped green beans, shucked corn, & basically helped to work up the vegetables, so that Mama Boyce could put them up.  She canned & froze the vegetables.  She made pickles out of the cucumbers & okra.   She would call my Aunt Edna over to make jelly.

My Aunt Edna laughs & says, “Mama had a child for everything.  If she needed something from town, she would call on Mary Helen.  If she needed to go to the doctor, your Daddy took her.  If she had to go to the hospital she wanted Tooter to help her.  If she needed help when she got out of the hospital, she would call Nancy.  If anyone was coming to visit or if the garden came in, she called me.”  Looking back, summers were dedicated to preparing for winter. It was a canning, freezing frenzy of a time.  Mama Boyce & Papa Clyde were determined we were going to have plenty to eat, while it was cold outside.  We had a big family, so that was a lot of preparation. They most certainly knew the importance of working & not being lazy.  The result, from the summer garden, was food in abundance all winter long.  It was a matter of taking care of their own.  Not haphazardly tossing caution to the wind, just sitting around waiting for someone else to provide for us. They realized things just did not happen.  They taught us hard work & preparation is key to success & survival.

Proverbs 6:6 says  Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,

8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

There is a method to the madness of an ant.  It’s preparation.  Just as my grandmother saw the importance of preparing for the winter.  There was no rest for those few months.  But, in the colder months, when our bellies were full of warm comfort foods, we understood why she insisted we be such worker ants.  It’s easier to appreciate the bountiful harvest, once the hard work is over.

There is something else that’s being prepared right this minute. That’s our home in heaven.

John 14:1-3  Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

I am so thankful for my preparing grandmother, but I am most thankful for my preparing Savior. What a blessing to know Jesus is making preparations for me to come be with Him.  That makes me smile!  I hope it makes you happy, too.  His preparations for us as Christians, in the end,  will make everything worthwhile.  Just as my earthly grandmother was so thoughtful in her preparing for our needs, the Lord is thinking of us right now, while he prepares for us to be with Him for eternity.  That should just make us feel really good.  Like chocolate gravy & biscuits good.

I am so glad you came by to visit with me today.  I always love when you stop by.  I hope you are getting some good fall weather wherever you are. Enjoy the rest of your day!  As for me, I have to be going, because I should be washing clothes.

When you get tired of it all, God’s there

Don't worry

(The Living Bible translation)

Sometimes I get tired. I am tired of my problems, tired of my circumstances, tired of things not going my way, tired of people not listening, tired of feeling upset, angry, disappointed, irritated, unappreciated, anxious, irritated, sad, & by the way, irritated! (Isn’t there a pill you can take for some of that? Sheesh!) I normally try to be an upbeat person, but you know, it can be tiring. That’s when I start to realize,

“What am I doing?”

I am trying to “do” all this life stuff by myself.

Well, that’s just nonsense.  There is Someone who promised me They would help, if I would let Them.
Matthew 11:28-30 says this, about that:

v. 28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
v. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
v. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

Our preacher spoke about this on Sunday. Here are some of the highlights:

1. Jesus invites us to Him. We have a tendency to want to do things our way. Jesus will not snap His fingers & take away all the problems we have created for ourselves, by bad choices. He will give us comfort, if we seek Him. Often time we struggle with messes we make. Our struggles could be from forgiveness to or from others. It could be from our finances, our family, addictions, to a lustful heart, envying, jealousy, or hatred. But, Jesus forgives. The apostle Peter had one of the biggest mouths of anyone. He was notorious for speaking before he thought. However, Jesus saw him fit to preach the first gospel sermon.(Acts 2) In the end, Peter was humbled. In I Peter 5: 6-7 he said, “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”

2. Take my yoke. Lay down your old ways & pick up a different set of priorities. In a yoke, it takes 2. You are connected to the Lord & His care, when you are yoked to Him. We should do what Jesus wants us to do instead of what we may want to do.

3. Learn of Me. If you continually do the things of the Lord, you will learn to love those things. We must make it a priority to follow Jesus in our lives. Only then, will you find rest.

My husband has always been taken back with how well I sleep at night. He says it does not matter what kinds of situations we are in, or what kind of storms of life are brewing, that I can sleep no matter what. Well, I guess I have conditioned myself to let a lot of things go, when it gets time for bed & be at peace with whatever it is going on. My only reasoning for this is the peace that passes all understanding that’s talked about in Philippians 4:7. (and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.) I just say my prayers & leave it with God. Sometimes that’s easier said than done. But it’s not impossible!
I hope if you are feeling tired of it all, you will know, there’s an answer to it all. Jesus! He will care for you & keep you as close to Him, as you will let Him. I can’t tell you how the love of God feels. It’s something you have to experience for yourself. I can tell you it is the best feeling in the world to know you are loved by Him. Just remember God is ABLE to do anything we ask.  Ask for peace.   I am so glad you stopped by to visit with me today. It was wonderful to spend some time with you. I hope to see you again, soon. However, I have to be going for now, because I should be washing clothes.

God is able

I was inspired, yet again, by Bro. Brad, to write this post. If he is reading this, he knows I was listening…. Thank you, Bro. Brad for preaching the Word in it’s simplicity.

Into the Word Wednesday-Friendship reminder

birds on tree

Is it Wednesday already?  I am so glad to be Into the Word with Falen & Laura at Upward Not Inward.  Those gals have a great link up every Wednesday where we tell what the Word has been saying to us during the week.

This week I read a scripture that really hit home for me.  I have learned so much, the past few years, about friendship.  I have learned about what kinds of people I want to be friends with.  And what kind of friend I want to be.  This verse really spoke to me in a powerful way.  It confirmed everything I already knew:

Psalms 22:24-25

Make no friendship with an angry man.

And with a furious man, do not go.

Lest you learn his ways,

And set a snare for your soul.

You see, I have been so fortunate to be surrounded by good friends.  These are people who are happy, loving, & genuinely concerned for me.  And I likewise, love & care about them, too.  It’s so easy to get caught up in judgmental, dramatic, angry, people.  This verse reminds me, it is poison for the soul.  Thank you, Lord, for this sweet reminder.

High Five for Friday

Happy Friday to all my peeps!  This has been one more week.  My grandson had surgery yesterday.  He will be 17 months old the 26th of this month.  He did well & hopefully will come home from the hospital soon.  With that said, I have been stressed out a wee bit- just thinking about what that little sweetie would be going through.  I have had some good happenings, though.  Without further delay here is my high five for Friday:

Miss Neenee taking a bowl down the lane.

Got to take Miss Neenee & one of her friends bowling.  They had a great time.  I always have fun with those two!

It would probably be pretty safe to say these 2 love to lick the beaters & spoon when we make a cake.  It would be a toss up on who loves it the most.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMiss Neenee did a science fair project.   It was on how to keep your hot chocolate the hottest.  It was a cute project.  She was bummed that she did not place.  When her sister picked her up from school & heard the sad story of her “honorable mention”- she promptly drove her to the nearest nail salon & got her a pedicure.  So thankful for my older girl’s being so SWEEEEEETTTT! 🙂

A little boy that could…..

Once upon a time a little baby boy was born.  1367A baby?? What are we going to do with a grandbaby?

1333His aunt said, I will feed him!  So, she did.

1393His aunt, Miss Neenee said, I will hold him.   So, she did.

1345Then, his other aunt, (whew! That’s a bunch of aunts!) said, all baby boys need to be so comfy they can stretch out their toes.  He needs to be comfy!  So, he was.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis baby turned one year old.  He was so happy!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This baby had the sweetest little heart.  Then, the doctors found out it was a special heart.  It had 3 tiny holes in it.  Well, that would never do.  The doctors said, “We have got to make this  heart, good, strong, & healthy”.  So, they did.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After that, the baby played & laughed & loved to be on his Aunt Neenee’s hip!  He was such a precious sight that no one could believe he had one more, teeny, tiny thing wrong.  One more time, the doctors said, “We have got to make sure this baby is perfectly perfect.”  So, once again, they did.  And that was today.  Mr. Sweetie Pants had another surgery.  And now, since God wants him to be big & strong & healthy He let him show the world the little strong trooper He meant for him to be.  Thank you God for healing this beautiful, loving, & delight of our lives baby boy.  (And his Grand-that’s me & Miss Neenee only cried a little.  By a little, I mean a lot. )

The end.

I John 4:7 & 8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God & knows God.  He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

How to read the Old Testament in a year- I think I can do it!

Alright, I know it’s February & I know you should know by now, sometimes, it takes me a little while to get things straight in my head. But, in my defense, once I do, I can normally “get to doing” whatever it is.

I have been making attempts at reading the Old Testament. I have read all of Genesis, Proverbs, & am working on Job. Today, I decided to take another approach, to keep me on track. After much thorough, grueling, & perplexing research ( I googled it & got my answer in a nano second), I found out, there are 929 chapters in the Old Testament. That is about 18 chapters a week, I need to be reading. One website suggested 2 chapters each week day, 3 chapters on Saturday & 5 chapters on Sunday. I liked that. This way, if I don’t want to read the books or chapters in Bible order, I can still stay on target.

Just wanted to pass this on to my peeps. (Yes, I consider you my peep ). Last year, I read the New Testament from Memorial Day to Labor Day.(You can see the reading schedule in one of my previous blogs in May 2012). You would be really surprised at how differently you understand the New Testament reading it like a book. Not just hopscotching through it, picking out verses and stories here & there. That’s what I had been doing for years. So glad I took the time to read it. I should be going now. I have to continue reading my 18 chapters, of the Old Testament, for this week & after that, alas, washing clothes……..

High Five For Friday!

January has sure been a month of ups & downs weather wise. We have had some warm weather then, cold, freezing rain/sleet/snow (though not much). Here we are at the LAST Friday in January! What will February bring?? Until then, let’s give a High Five For Friday.

Chocolate covered strawberries (homemade)

Chocolate covered strawberries (homemade)

These were my 1st attempt at those delectable chocolate covered strawberries you see everywhere, this time of year.  I was going to make them closer to Valentine’s Day.  But what the hey, there’s no time like the present!  They tasted pretty good…

Quinoa

Quinoa

One of my co-workers is such a wonderful inspiration, when it comes to health & fitness.  You can visit her awesome blog at www.thewhitedish.wordpress.com   She often times has news of what she has been doing to keep fit.  One of the dishes she has been talking about is quinoa.  She inspired me to try my own version of quinoa.  This is roasted red pepper & basil (that I doctored up just a wee bit).  It was all good & healthy, though.  This was a delicious dish & truly a much needed break-thru in my substandard regular diet! (See chocolate strawberries above, which is fruit, so, in reality, it could be classified as moderately healthy.  I said could be…)

Cleaning service arrived!

Cleaning service arrived!

My favorite cleaning service was in the house this week.  Not only does he sweep, he cleans the toliet, empties out my cabinets, throws lots of stuff in the garbage, & can dust the coffee table in his socks.  We may or may not tell his parents about all the great things he does each visit.  That way, they may or may not let him keep coming back.

Saw some sunshine this week

On the drive in to school & work one morning, saw a rare sight.  Little bit of sunshine.

My 1st 5k of the year will be at Jay Bird Park

So excited about my 1st 5k of the year.  It will be at Jay Bird Park.  My friend Jen said she was gonna get us signed up.  Can’t wait to get out there & begin racing, this year!

I hope everybody’s week was good.  If not, there are still a few more to go in 2013!  I will be linking in with Lauren from my grey desk.  Come on over to the link party!  We always have a fantastic time!

Link in with Lauren! You will be glad you did!

High Five for Friday

I have missed doing a High Five for Friday- for a couple of weeks. So glad to be back with everyone celebrating Friday! For starters, I hope everyone is having a great holiday season. Ours has been wonderful so far. One of the things we have been doing for the past few years is going to see Disney on Ice. My favorite is Tinkerbell!Tinkerbell

Miss Neenee had a dance recital Saturday. She had such a good time performing. It was a fun day for her!

Our Elf on the Shelf, Gracia, did not feel too welcome the 1st night at our house. The duck is holding a sign that says, “Go home! This is our house!” Gracia had a better week, though. She left a note today saying we were all on the nice list. I just hope it stays that way!

Happy Friday everyone! I will be linking in with Lauren From My Grey Desk. She has the BEST link party every Friday. Have a great weekend! I will be doing a bit more Christmas shopping. Even though, Lord knows, I have more clothes to wash than ever! What are you doing this weekend??

Introducing our Elf on the Shelf

I bought Miss Neenee an Elf on the Shelf.  After I took her & had her pick it out & bought it, I had the thought, ‘Perhaps this Elf on the Shelf was just supposed to “appear magically” from Santa’s Wonderland.’  Well, I mess that up.  We got her home, read the book, named her Gracia (you say it GRAY-Sha like the girl we fell in love with on the Voice that yodeled.)  Anyway, we also registered her on line & of course Santa Claus sent us an email.  He is just awesome that way.  For those of you, like me, that may not be sure what to do with an Elf on the Shelf, let me give you a short run down of what’s up with it.  So, the elf is at your house to watch your kids to make sure they are being good for Santa.  Each night, the elf magically goes back up to the North Pole & tells Santa what they saw the kids doing that day.  The next morning, you wake up & the elf has moved somewhere else in house, for you to find.  On Christmas, Santa takes the elf back to the North Pole to stay until about oh, let’s see, Thanksgiving the next year.  Then the elf comes back.  Miss Neenee told me we could not touch the elf or it would lose it’s magic & die.  Some elves are mischievous.  However, I think ours is not too bad.   The 1st day, well, let’s just say she did not feel too welcome.

2012-12-15_07.42.35

Let me explain this situation.  Some of Miss Neenee’s other toys must have gotten jealous of this new toy.  They tied Gracia up & the duck is holding a sign that reads: “GO HOME! This is our house!”  Poor Gracia.  Not exactly the welcoming committee.  Miss Neenee did spank the 4 dolls bottoms & explained in pure Southern tongue, that what they had done was NOT acceptable. It went something like,”Lord, have mercy, ya’ll.  Ya’ll all are gettin’ lumps of coal!”

The 2nd day, Gracia must have got to looking for something sweet to eat.  We found her in the pantry, no less, drinking pancake syrup. Miss Neenee said elves LOVE sweet stuff.

2012-12-16_18.07.20

We will see what all this elf gets in to.  I will say a friend of mine told me she saw on Facebook “The Belt on the Shelf”.  Which as you can imagine was supposed to be for kids that did not respond properly to much anything else, especially an elf watching them.  I saw some kids in the grocery store yesterday that could have used that.  It was a dad with a boy around 6yrs. & a little girl about 4yrs.  They were acting like a bunch of wild Banshee Indians.  He was telling them to quit this & quit that.  I just thought, why don’t you tell them Santa’s watching? That usually does the trick, this time of year.  Or stop talking & take them to the bathroom & make them understand that acting good in the grocery store is the right thing to do- with his belt.  I cannot stand hearing parents over & over telling their kids to behave, stop it, quit it.  We were not raised like that.  If my Mama had to tell us past once, she would definitely tell us in a way we understood.  And if we didn’t there was always Daddy.

I hope everyone is taking in your Christmas traditions.  It will be over & gone before we know it! It’s been wonderful visiting with you today.  I have to be going now, because I should be washing clothes.
