The art of loafin’

Today, while in one of our local eating establishments, I saw a young lady I go to church with. Her mama & little brother were with her. She also had her sweet baby girl, who is almost 2 & her brand new baby boy, with her. Her baby girl was running around, trying to make as many friends as she could, with the patrons, before her mama whisked her away & back over to their table. The baby boy was taking a bottle & fretting a little.

I asked my friend, “What are ya’ll doing?” She smiles and says, “Just loafin’.”

For those of you who do not understand what she meant, maybe I can enlighten you, on one of the ways of our culture.  In the South, there is a certain art to what we call “loafin’ “.  When we are out & about, without any real designation to where we need to be going or what we should be doing, we are loafin’ .  Some may say “loaferin’.  Either way, you have no schedule, no concern whatsoever for time.  Things are slow.  You are unhurried.  There is no need, to pay any mind, to how long it takes you to do anything.  You have no agenda.  No thought of what you may or may not do next.  It’s an innocent way of wasting time.  Some people may like to refer to it as, “chillin'”, “cruisin'”, or as my middle daughter says all the time, “just hangin’ out”.  You have no regard for much of anything but right there in the moment of killing time.  However, you can’t loaf or loafer all the time.  That would just make you lazy.

There is one thing, though, that we should be aware of:  what we are doing to guarantee us a home in heaven.  Unlike “loafin”, our spiritual journey should be a work in progress. We can’t be lazy when it comes to the most important thing on our list of things to do while living, “Prepare to get to heaven”.  We should be attentive each day of what work we should be doing to get to heaven.  Then, take action to make sure we don’t miss out.

Jesus tells us in John 14, beginning in verse 1-3:

Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in me.  In My Father’s house are many mansions,  if it were not so, I would have told you.  I go to prepare a place for you, & if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am , there you may be also.”

I want to be where Jesus is.  I know to get there, I can’t “loaf’ around.  One of the things I must do is have faith, but I am told in James 2: 17 that faith without works is dead.  I can’t have a dead faith!

I Corinthians 13: 13 says, “And now abide faith, hope, love, these three: but the greatest of these is love.”

I must also work on having love for those around me.  I must treat people as I want to be treated (Matthew 7:12).  I must be meek, a peacemaker, pure in heart, merciful, & let my light shine (Matthew 5:5-16).  I have to be always endeavoring to keep the commandments of the Lord.

Jesus talks about not knowing when Judgment Day will be.

Matthew 24:36 says, “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”

Whew!  That’s a lot for an ‘ol girl , like me, to work on.  My prayer is we strive to be as Godly as possible.  Not letting one day slip by us when we could have served God.  We just don’t know when Jesus will come back to get us.  In our Christian life, we can’t be caught “loafin’.”

I am so glad you came by to visit with me today.  I have been so busy lately.  Not only has it been summer with kids out of school & such.  My oldest daughter got married!  (I will fill you in on that later.) Until then, I have to go, because I should be washing clothes.

Peace doesn’t mean you won’t have problems.  It means problems won’t have you.- Lecrae

National Multiple Sclerosis Day – It’s today!

National MS Day

I had no idea there was an actual Multiple Sclerosis Day! I have the deepest respect for those who have MS.   My Mama had MS, so I am a first hand cheerleader for anyone with this disease.  I know MS normally shows up in people in their 20s & 30s. I did read a story about a girl who found out she had MS at the age of 19. She is such a brave person.  Please take time to read her story of courage & hope here.

So thankful for the people who have come up with this idea to honor these precious folks with MS.  I am so glad you came by to visit with me today. I have to be going now because I should be washing clothes.

Happy Memorial Day to all of you.  I just want to say “Thank you” to all of our military, past & present, for all you have done for our country.  God Bless America!  (Yes, you can say stuff like that here, on my blog.)  My personal heroes are my Grandfather, Father-in-law, & Cousin.  My Grandfather & Father-in-law served in the Army.  My cousin served in the Navy.  Without strong & brave men like these, I would not be free to be here wishing everyone a Happy Memorial Day.  I wrote about my Grandfather last year on Memorial Day.   You can read about how great he was here.

We will be doing some grilling & hanging out with friends & family.  What are your plans for Memorial Day?  Whatever it is have a safe & Happy Memorial Day.  For me, I have to be going, because I should be washing clothes.

mama graduation

My Mama’s graduation picture 1964
Today, 11 years ago, my Mama passed away.  I was 30 years old at the time.  It goes without saying, I still needed her really badly.  At first, I was in a pretty big shock.  All of a sudden, I did not have anyone to tell me what to do.  How do you live like that?  I never had to give one thought to how I was going to do this or that.  I had my Mama there to tell me what was best.  I cannot tell you the times I have sat & pondered, “If my Mama was here, what would she say for me to do?”

There was a lot of things my Mama was.  She was a Christian, first & foremost.  She was the BEST mother you could ever imagine.  She loved us beyond anything I could have ever asked for.  She loved to cook & was a great cook.  She would always see the bright & good side of things.  She had a wonderful sense of humor & knew how to make people feel at ease around her.  She loved people & being with her family.  She went to church all her life.  She went when she would have my Daddy get her ready, pick her up, put her in the van, & then push her in the church in her wheelchair.  She worked hard all her life.  She was a wonderful housekeeper.  I can remember she would keep a vacuum cleaner in the closet in our foyer.  She vacuumed the entry way EVERY DAY.  It’s funny the things you remember about people.  She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1987.  She fought the hardest of anyone I have ever seen with a disease.  She & I were very close.  She was very close to my brother, too.  She was just like that.

Today, I just want to take a minute to say- I miss my Mama.

Multiple Sclerosis Awareness week March 11-17

ms monthMarch is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness month.  March 11-17th is MS Awareness week.  My Mama had MS & died at the age of 55.  There have been many developments & break-throughs with MS, since she was diagnosed.  Here are some questions & answers, that you may find interesting,  about MS:

What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system (the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord). It is thought to be an autoimmune disorder. This means the immune system incorrectly attacks the person’s healthy tissue.

MS can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, and blindness and more. These problems may be permanent or may come and go.

Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, although individuals as young as 2 and as old as 75 have developed it. MS is not considered a fatal disease as the vast majority of people with it live a normal life-span. But they may struggle to live as productively as they desire, often facing increasing limitations.

Who gets MS?

Anyone may develop MS but there are some patterns. More than twice as many women as men have MS. Studies suggest that genetic factors make certain individuals more susceptible than others, but there is no evidence that MS is directly inherited. MS occurs in most ethnic groups, including African-Americans, Asians and Hispanics/Latinos, but is more common in Caucasians of northern European ancestry.

How many people have MS?

More than 2.1 million people are affected by MS worldwide. Because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not require U.S. physicians to report new cases, and because symptoms can be completely invisible, the prevalence of MS in the U.S. can only be estimated. The Society continues to advocate for the establishment of a national registry that will track the number of people living with MS and has made a commitment to re-evaluate the current prevalence estimate and investigate the process by which an updated estimate can be identified.

What are the typical symptoms of MS?

Symptoms of MS are unpredictable, vary from person to person, and from time to time in the same person. For example: One person may experience abnormal fatigue and episodes of numbness and tingling. Another could have loss of balance and muscle coordination making walking difficult. Still another could have slurred speech, tremors, stiffness, and bladder problems.

Sometimes major symptoms disappear completely, and the person regains lost functions. In severe MS, people have symptoms on a permanent basis including partial or complete paralysis, and difficulties with vision, cognition, speech, and elimination.

What causes the symptoms?

MS symptoms result when an immune-system attack affects myelin, the protective insulation surrounding nerve fibers of the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). Myelin is destroyed and replaced by scars of hardened “sclerotic” tissue. Some underlying nerve fibers are permanently severed. The damage appears in multiple places within the central nervous system.

Myelin is often compared to insulating material around an electrical wire; loss of myelin interferes with the transmission of nerve signals.

Is MS fatal?

In rare cases MS is so malignantly progressive it is terminal, but most people with MS have a normal or near-normal life expectancy. Severe MS can shorten life.

Does MS always cause paralysis?

No. Moreover, the majority of people with MS do not become severely disabled. Two-thirds of people who have MS remain able to walk, though many will need an aid, such as a cane or crutches, and some will use a scooter or wheelchair because of fatigue, weakness, balance problems, or to assist with conserving energy.

Is MS contagious or inherited?

No. MS is not contagious and is not directly inherited. Studies do indicate that genetic factors may make certain individuals susceptible to the disease.

Can MS be cured?

Not yet. There are now FDA-approved medications that have been shown to “modify” or slow down the underlying course of MS. In addition, many therapeutic and technological advances are helping people manage symptoms. Advances in treating and understanding MS are made every year, and progress in research to find a cure is very encouraging.

What medications and treatments are available?

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society recommends that a person consider treatment with one of the FDA-approved “disease-modifying” drugs as soon as possible following a definite diagnosis of MS with active or relapsing disease. These drugs help to lessen the frequency and severity of MS attacks, reduce the accumulation of lesions (areas of damage) in the brain, and may slow the progression of disability.

In addition to drugs that address the basic disease, there are many therapies for MS symptoms such as spasticity, pain, bladder problems, fatigue, sexual dysfunction, weakness, and cognitive problems. People should consult a knowledgeable physician to develop a comprehensive approach to managing their MS

Why is MS so difficult to diagnose?

In early MS, symptoms that might indicate any number of possible disorders come and go. Some people have symptoms that are very difficult for physicians to interpret, and these people must “wait and see.” While no single laboratory test is yet available to prove or rule out MS, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a great help in reaching a definitive diagnosis.

A cow with no horns

cows with no horns

“Mister, why doesn’t this cow have any horns?” asked the young lady from a nearby city, on a trip to the country.

The farmer kinda had a funny look on his face, for a moment.  He then began in a very patient tone. “Well ma’am cattle can do a powerful lot of damage with horns.  Sometimes, we keep’em trimmed down with a hacksaw.  Other times we can fix up the young’uns by puttin’ a couple of drops of acid where their horns would grow in, and that stops’em cold.  Still, there are some breeds of cattle that never grow horns,” the farmer continued.  “But the reason this cow don’t have no horns, ma’am, is ’cause it’s a horse.”

Have you ever felt misunderstood?  I know I have.  Sometimes I feel like no one could ever understand how I feel about certain things in my life.  My kids, my family, my church- these are all things I have a particular emotional tie to.  I feel like there are times that it’s hard to put into words my love, my attempts of caring, and my concern.  When my college age daughter doesn’t answer her phone, it may be something as simple as she’s in a spot with no service or she’s driving.  I start to worry.  And by the time I do talk to her, I may be a tad impatient.  (By a tad, I mean a gigantic frenzy of WHAT IN THE WORLD HAVE YOU BEEN DOING??)  She & I may be a little misunderstood with each other at that moment.  She doesn’t seem to  know what all the hoopla is about.  I don’t know why she has to be so nonchalant about my hissy fit.  In the end, we agree, that if I did not love her & care about her well being, it would not matter if she answered her phone or not.  We may sometimes misunderstand each other.  However, there is One that is always here to understand us.  All we have to do is trust.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord, with all your heart. And lean not on your own understanding.  v.6 In all your ways acknowledge Him & He shall direct your paths.

I hope that if you feel misunderstood, that you will seek out the understanding that God gives us.  He can love us & be there for us like no other.  There is nothing that can fill the God shaped void in one’s life, but God himself.  I am so glad you stopped by to visit with me today.  I love it when you drop by.  Until next time,  I have to be going, because I should be washing clothes….

High Five for Friday

Happy Friday to all my peeps!  This has been one more week.  My grandson had surgery yesterday.  He will be 17 months old the 26th of this month.  He did well & hopefully will come home from the hospital soon.  With that said, I have been stressed out a wee bit- just thinking about what that little sweetie would be going through.  I have had some good happenings, though.  Without further delay here is my high five for Friday:

A little boy that could…..

Once upon a time a little baby boy was born.  1367A baby?? What are we going to do with a grandbaby?

1333His aunt said, I will feed him!  So, she did.

1393His aunt, Miss Neenee said, I will hold him.   So, she did.

1345Then, his other aunt, (whew! That’s a bunch of aunts!) said, all baby boys need to be so comfy they can stretch out their toes.  He needs to be comfy!  So, he was.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis baby turned one year old.  He was so happy!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This baby had the sweetest little heart.  Then, the doctors found out it was a special heart.  It had 3 tiny holes in it.  Well, that would never do.  The doctors said, “We have got to make this  heart, good, strong, & healthy”.  So, they did.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After that, the baby played & laughed & loved to be on his Aunt Neenee’s hip!  He was such a precious sight that no one could believe he had one more, teeny, tiny thing wrong.  One more time, the doctors said, “We have got to make sure this baby is perfectly perfect.”  So, once again, they did.  And that was today.  Mr. Sweetie Pants had another surgery.  And now, since God wants him to be big & strong & healthy He let him show the world the little strong trooper He meant for him to be.  Thank you God for healing this beautiful, loving, & delight of our lives baby boy.  (And his Grand-that’s me & Miss Neenee only cried a little.  By a little, I mean a lot. )

The end.

I John 4:7 & 8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God & knows God.  He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Courage- to make relationships better

OneWord2013_Courage150[1]

MonthlyOneWord150

I am glad to get the chance to link up with Melanie at Only A Breath blog to talk about my one word.  This year I chose “Courage” to be my one word.  When I was thinking about my one word, I was thinking a word that would help me to be the best I could be.  I made a list & thought about what I should work on.  It came to mind that everything in my life, that was holding me back, had to do with action.  It was being afraid to step out & act on something.  It was being too lazy to act on something.  It was getting my thoughts together.  It was communicating & trusting. It was wallowing in situations, that I just did not have the will to overcome.   All of it was entwined in the word “Courage”.  Since I picked my word, I have never looked back.

Just this past week, I made a commitment to myself that I would have the courage to make some of my relationships better.  I started by talking to my Daddy for about 30 minutes on the phone.  For he & I that is like 3 hours to someone else!  He is retired & doing his own thing.  My mother passed away in 2002.  Since then, he has enjoyed being able to be on his own, without responsibilities.  Sometimes I resent that just a teeny bit.  Probably because I think he should be over at my house, seeing what I need, doing things with my family, hanging around, seeing what I need, telling me everywhere he is going & what he is doing, seeing what I need, etc.,.(Do you see a pattern here?)  He is more of the “if you need me call me” type.  When I need him, I call him & he comes.  HOWEVER,  I thought, you know, I should be less selfish about this.  Not having my feelings hurt because I don’t know what he’s doing every day.   So, I am planning to call him more, visit him more, & then just leave him alone (like he likes )  Then, I talked to my brother & emailed him & text him multiple times.  He is another that I want to make more time with. He & his family live 4 hours away.  So, that does not always give the best circumstances.  We did say we were visiting each other VERY SOON.  I love him so much.  It’s just when you have your own family & live 200 miles apart, you kinda get in your own routine & forget to call & email & text- not to mention visit.  It takes courage to keep relationships going.  I can’t get my feelings hurt about the relationships with them not being all that I want them to be, when I am not making an effort.  I am using my courage to help be more involved in my Daddy & brother’s lives.  Hopefully, next month I can tell you about some great memories we’ve made !

Thank you, Melanie for having this wonderful link up to tell about our one word.  I have been so inspired by Courage this year.  It has helped me make some really simple decisions .  I already feel better about where this year has been taking me.  I appreciate you stopping by my blog.  It’s always great to have company!  I have to be going now, because I should be washing clothes.

High Five for Friday

I have missed doing a High Five for Friday- for a couple of weeks. So glad to be back with everyone celebrating Friday! For starters, I hope everyone is having a great holiday season. Ours has been wonderful so far. One of the things we have been doing for the past few years is going to see Disney on Ice. My favorite is Tinkerbell!Tinkerbell
