Raising a peacemaker & this is what my Thanksgiving looked like

nurses_office_1018

The other day, I got a phone call from the school.  It was my Miss Neenee.  She began telling me she was in the nurse’s office.  (Which from my experience, has never turned out good.)

She said she had been hit by a boy in P.E. They were playing basketball.  They were both going up to catch the ball.  The boy slammed into her, to get the ball. Then, the ball hit her in the face.  All of that commotion broke her glasses & left a cut on her eyebrow.

broken glasses

She started by telling me,

“Mama, I’m in the nurse’s office.  I cut my eye playing ball & broke my glasses.”

“You cut your eye?  Your eyeball?”  I was just a smidge panicked.

“No, the outside close to my eyebrow.  And it’s bleeding.” She said.

“It’s bleeding???” Now, full blown anxiety & confusion has set in.  And apparently, I sounded too frantic, because the nurse got on the phone.

The kind nurse reassured me she was not bleeding profusely.  That she took a lick on the eye & her glasses were broken.  She put the Miss back on the phone.  I asked her did she need to be picked up & she did not.

After we got home, I asked her, “Who was this boy & what did you do when you got hit?”

Well, first she cried.  Then, she went to the nurse’s office (accompanied by one of her besties, no less).

basketball

“What happened with the little boy?” I pressed.

“He kept saying he was sorry & he said he would buy me some new glasses.” She said

“Well, what did you do to him?”  I quizzed.

“Umm, nothing.  He said he was sorry.  A bunch.”  She replied.

Really?  No big throw down?  No show down amongst the 5th & 6th grader P.E. students?  If it had of been me, I would have probably had to smack some heads.  You can’t push somebody around & get by with it.  Then, I thought about what Jesus said, in His sermon on the mount:

Matthew 5:9

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. (ESV)

Matthew 5:38-39

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. (ESV)

By Miss Neenee just letting it go, she became a peacemaker, like Jesus is talking about there in verse 9.  She passed on the opportunity to retaliate.   She turned the other cheek.  Perhaps I could learn a lesson here.  Maybe we all could.  Keep your temper & anger in check.  It’s what Jesus would want us to do.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  We most certainly did.  I was off work for 4 days.  Out of those 4 days I saw my kids & grandkids every day.  That’s a lot of happiness for me.  I even got to keep my grandbabies for some of that time.  Fun was had by all.  I hope you have a wonderful week.  As for me, I have to be going because I should be washing clothes.

How I found Faith at the local Sonic & loving Bible study

Does anyone besides me live in the land of convenience? We schedule everything, to our leisure.  My Mamaw used to wash clothes on Tuesdays.  Every Tuesday, she would go out to the cellar & crank up that old washing machine.  It was one of the old ones that had the wringer you put the clothes in.  Similar to this one.

washer kenmore

Now, I can load a ton of clothes in my high efficiency washer & schedule when I want it to wash. It can wash right then.  Or I can schedule it for 3hours or 6 hours to commence to getting our clothes clean.  Convenience.  Then, there is my dishwasher.  My Mamaw did not have a dishwasher.  She hand washed everything that passed through her sink.  Right then.  There was ne’er a dirty dish in her sink.  My dishwasher will allow you to schedule the washing of the china (which is actually Corelle), at 3 or 6 hours.  What ever is best for me, is just fine with the dishwasher.

There are some things that we must not do out of convenience or leisure. Bible reading is one of them.  Not saying reading the Bible in your leisure time is not a great way to spend your time.  Just saying it should be a priority, not something you leave to do if you have time.  Reading the Bible is a wonderful way of having your faith strengthened.  Prayer is our avenue we use to talk to the Lord.  And he wants to hear from us & what we have to say.  The Bible is the Lord talking back to you.  What kind of relationship would you have with someone if you were the one doing the talking all the time?  You never took time to listen to what the other person had to say.  That’s why I believe it is so important to make time to listen to the Lord daily.  We should be hungry for his word.  Not, something we just check off our daily list of to dos.

II Timothy 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (KJV)

II Peter 1:4

by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

What kind of promises are these that Peter talks about? If we don’t read our Bibles, then, we won’t ever know.

Melanie over at Only a Breath, has begun a faith series about reading the Bible. It starts today.  Go on over & see what she has to share about Bible reading.  I will be joining her for this wonderful series.  I hope you will make a little time to be with us.31DaysEnjoyBibleReading

We had a funny thing happen to us Sunday night. We attended church at a sister church.  The churches in our area sponsor Campaign for Christ.  Which is like an area wide  meeting or revival .  The preacher spoke about faith.  He spoke about how to have faith, having faith, & how faith works in our lives.  It was a wonderful night.  There was 1,013 folks in attendance.  It was a great night. (Did I already say that?)  We really enjoyed ourselves.  Afterwards, Miss Neenee suggested we stop for ice cream.  I placed our order & waited for the deliciousness to arrive.  After awhile, the carhop came out to the car.  Of course we were excited to see her.  She came bearing sundaes!  As I was handing the treats to my daughters, I noticed her name tag.  You know what her name was?  Faith.  Coincidence?  I think not.

I hope you all are having a wonderful week.  My past weekend was full of little boys playing, rippin’ & rompin’.  We made a trip to see the ducks & to the park.  Even though there was a fare amount of ballin’ & squallin’ their eyes out when we were leaving.  Fun was had by all. (Hey, sometimes little kids don’t want good times to end.)  And by Monday, I was going to work to rest.  Thank the Lord for sweet grandbabies. Amen.  Until we go on more adventures, I have to be going, because I should be washing clothes.

How I had my faith strengthened & it’s ok to pick up your dirty socks

faith

You know, I never get tired of having my faith strengthened. God is such a working God.  He is on time, every time.  This past week, a sweet friend shared with me a beautiful story of God being hard at work in her life.

A friend of mine has been going through some trials. She has had her fair share of ups & downs here of late.  Sometimes, during the week, we may just get a minute to share what we have going on.  At times, it’s just a shaking of our heads in passing, saying- “Pray for me.”  And we do.  That’s why when she sent me a quick message, this week, I knew our prayers were being heard.  My friend’s mother has been in poor health.  She is older & is having quite a time.  My friend & her sister have been wearing themselves to a frazzle trying to take care of her.  Her doctor had discussed with my friend & her family about moving her to an assisted living center.  Of course, there goes more sleepless nights for my friend.  She knew in her head this was what was best for her mama.  But her heart kept tugging at her to keep her at home. When the day finally came to talk to her mama about staying in an assisted living home, her mama was just fine with it.  The doctor talked to her mama & explained to her this was what she needed right now.  She was all in.  No kicking, screaming, spittin’, cussin’ or anything, from my friend or her mama.  My friend was so thankful to the Lord & relieved.  She knew it was the prayers of hers & her family & friends that made it all work out.

faith I

Change is hard. Sickness & getting older is hard.  There comes a time that we have to make decisions we don’t want to.  We have responsibilities to others.  And sometimes those hard decisions may have to do with our parents.  I know for me, when my mama got so sick, it was awful.  It was especially heartbreaking to have to move her to a place with 24 hour nurse care.   Nobody wants to have to move a loved one from their own home, to somewhere strange & unknown- even for their own good.  But with a lot of prayer, we did what we had to do.  We put our heart to the side & went with what our head told us to do.  Our main goal was to take care of her needs.  That’s what I told my friend, the last time we talked about her sweet mama.  “Remember, this is something to work out in your head, not your heart.”  She did the right thing.  She asked the Lord for help.  I think sometimes we don’t receive because we don’t ask.

Sadly very true....

Sadly very true….

James 1:6 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.

Just like anything, our asking has conditions. We must ask for things that are Godly & for the glory of the Lord.  Not for our own selfish benefit.

James 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

I think it was wonderful that my friend took all of this to our Lord. He was the One that made the difference.  We must rely on God’s divine will.  Not ours.

I am so glad you stopped by to visit with me today. Have I told you lately that I’m happy you are here?  I appreciate the time you give to coming by this little blog.  I also wanted to take this time to apologize to the cable man that came to fix our internet this week.  I am sorry you had to see my husband’s dirty socks on my bedroom floor.  I had fully intended on being home to pick them up before you got there.  Don’t worry.  I gave him a good scolding.  Since he was the one that let you back there anyway.  Trust me.  I know the talking to I gave him did a lot of good.  Because his dirty socks, he took off last night, were perhaps in the exact same area this morning.  I do love that man.  Even though he is a non-dirty sock picker upper.    I hope everyone has a blessed weekend.  As for me, I will be doing a little sewing for my granddaughter.  She’s got to have some new things for fall & Christmas.  I will share some of it with you, soon.  Until then, I have to be going because I should be washing clothes.

Oh & p.s. Happy 3rd birthday today to Mr. Sweetie Pants!!

Singing to the top of my lungs & leaning on the everlasting arms

sing

What would you do if you didn’t know how to sing?  There would be no singing in the shower, no happy noise around the house, no entertainment in the car.  There would be no sayings like,

“He couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.  Bless his heart.”

One time we were having a Ladies Day at church & I was asked to lead singing.  I was so excited!  My family was full of people who could sing well.  My uncle is a song leader at his church.

I asked him, “What do I need to do?  Which songs should I pick out?  I can’t even read music.  Is that going to be a big deal?”

He said, “I am going to tell you something a lot of people don’t know.  Our family sings by letter.  We just open up our mouths & let ‘er fly.”

Whew!  I’m so glad I got to carry on my family tradition.  Because that’s exactly what I did.  And I think it worked out ok.  I had a lot of fun, I know that.

We had a missionary come to church Sunday. He gave a report on work he & his wife were doing in Italy & Ukraine.  He showed one picture on Powerpoint & said,

“This is a time we were teaching the people how to sing.  They didn’t know how to sing church hymns.”

Well, don’t that beat all?  Since I have been singing in church since I was a wee thing, I can’t imagine not knowing how to sing church songs.  I remember thinking my job was to sing louder than anyone.  When I was 5 or 6 years old, I can remember my mama telling me she loved hearing me sing, but it was not necessary that I was the loudest in church.  Do tell.

keep-calm-and-sing-out-loud-8

When making trips to town, as a young girl, my grandfather & I would sing Old MacDonald, in his old Corvair pick up truck.  My grandmother used to sing to us kids.  It was mostly songs she had made up.  She would rock us & sing.  It was better than anything you can imagine.  She had such a way to comfort us young’uns.  After church on Sundays, at my Papaw & Mamaw’s house, one of us kids would grab a song book.  We would stand in the den, with my grandparents, mama, daddy, aunts, uncles, cousins, & one of would be the song leader.  All of us would sing our hearts out.  My brother would sing, “Leaning on Jesus Everlasting Arm” just like my Uncle Frank did at church.  Everybody would “request songs” & we would sing them.  Good times.

leaning

At church, there were Sunday singings after our dinner on the ground.  That’s where the men of the congregation would take turns singing songs.  We would go around the room & whoever wanted to lead a song could.  Young, old, it didn’t matter.  We just loved to sing.

Did you know one of the things we will be doing in heaven is singing?  That makes it mine & your responsibility to be a practicin’!

Revelation 15:3

They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: “Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints! (NKJV)

It’s a known fact that everybody can sing.  Some may read music.  Some may sing like a bird.  Some may make the dogs howl when they commence to singin’.  Like us, some may sing by letter, but it’s all beautiful to God, when we worship the Lord.  Even though my mama thought it not proper to sing to the top of my lungs, when I was a young lass, that didn’t damper my spirit at all.  I still love to sing along with our congregation.  It’s hard to sing & not just feel better. And don’t think I have not taken the opportunity of teaching my kids & grandkids to love singing.  I sing to these babies & Mr. Sweetie Pants sings back to me.  He can belt out, “Jesus Loves Me” or “Rock Me Mama Like a Wagonwheel” in just a split second.

I hope you are having a good week.  We are going to be having some cooler weather closer to the weekend.  Oh yeah!  I got to see all my grandkids this weekend.  We had a big ol’ time.  What fun things have you done lately?  I want to hear all about it.  But for now, I have to be going because I should be washing clothes.

Happy birthday Daddy & sometimes you just need to get your own tractor

Over the weekend, we had a birthday lunch for my Daddy.  He only turned 70 this year!  That’s a lot of birthdays for a baby that was born with a hole in his heart.

Daddy & Livie

Daddy & Livie

This picture of Daddy & my niece Livie is remarkable & amazing. Mostly, because Daddy just came from a several day long stay with Livie & Jaydub whilest my brother & wife were off on vacation.  Remarkable & amazing because Livie will still sit beside him & smile!  Let alone speak to him.  I don’t think he was too hard on them.

This is my eldest daughter, Ray, & Miss Neenee.  You see my daughter’s eyes?  She was supervising my brother, holding my sweet little granddaughter.  Mother hen.

We a pizza eatin' bunch.

We a pizza eatin’ bunch.

Of course there was food.  We always need a reason to get together to eat.  Birthdays, holidays, Sunday after church, Thursday night grilled, any reason, really.  Why?  Because we are just that good at it.  My nephew said the prayer & we chowed down.

Close up Mr. Sweetie Pants

“Grand can you see me?”

And then there was the entertainment.  We had my 5 month old granddaughter, to pass around.  There was lots of ooing & ahhing over her.  My sister in law just says, “I will handle the baby.”  And she does.  Mr. Sweetie Pants sat in his seat for approximately 1.35 minutes while he shoved a few bites of pizza in his mouth.  The rest of the time it was lots of  him running, doing his superhero impressions, & me silently praying, thanking the Good Lord above we had our dining area to ourselves.

Ray & Mr. Sweetie Pants

Occasionally, Mr. Sweetie Pants would stop, just long enough for one of the girls to grab him & hold him.

Time for a birthday cupcake!

And once he stopped just long enough to grab a birthday cupcake.  And to say, “What about now, Grand? Do you see me?”  Yes I do.  Now stop it.

It seems like my niece & nephew were just the size of Mr. Sweetie Pants.  Now, he is 16 & she is 13.  Time quit flying!!

Happy birthday to my Daddy!

There were a few other camera dodgers that were there with us.  We had a wonderful afternoon.  Daddy left with another birthday under his belt & I left one tired Grand.

Thank you for stopping by to see me today.  I hope you are having a terrific week.  With the holiday, we will have a short work week.  Sign me up for some more of that!  I have to be going now, because I should be washing clothes.

Noah’s ark & some complaining

noah's ark

I have a Bible class at church.  I look so forward to being with these lovelies each week.  They are 1st & 2nd graders.  Oh, the questions they have about God’s word!  It is amazing to look through the eyes of a child.  So, I knew when I was studying to teach them about Noah’s ark, I had better know my stuff.  As I was reading over the story in Genesis, I came across a verse that I immediately identified with.

Genesis 8:

So it came to pass, at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made. Then he sent out a raven, which kept going to and fro until the waters had dried up from the earth.

Sometimes we seem to overlook that raven.  We see pictures about the dove, that comes back with the olive branch.  But the raven has kinda gotten muddled up in the story somehow.  Well, let me tell you.

I think the raven was very significant.

Raven

I feel it’s pain.  Sometimes I feel like all I do is go “to & fro” with unrelenting problems.  Will they ever stop?  Will I be going back & forth forever?  At times, it sure does seem like it.  Whether it’s one of my kids sick with a stomach bug, bills that need to be paid, like yesterday, people who don’t get the concept of a car line at school, those who think more of themselves, than others, people who say harsh words to my loved ones,  my son, who has chosen a destructive path in life, missing my mama, mother-in-law, father-in-law, grandparents who have all gone on, life can get pretty crazy, ya know?  With my big family, I am constantly thinking, “What do I need to do next?” because something is always happening with one of us. When the doctor gives you 8 pills to take a day to “cure” your stomach problems, perhaps you may think will this ever end??  Stress can get pretty high every once in awhile.  And then, the hot water line to the washing machine starts to leak.  God bless my son-in-law for being around to fix stuff, when no one else is around!  I think, maybe once winter is over & we can get outside & get some fresh air, maybe things will settle down.  Oh wait, I get POISON IVY about every time I get in the yard.  Do you see where I am going with this?  To and fro, flying around, like Noah’s raven.  Nowhere to rest!  Sometimes, I think the only thing to make it all better is pitchin’ a dyin’ duck dawg fit.  Just gettin’ everybody while I’m at it.  Even the cat.

But then you know what?  Just like the raven, I hit dry land.  I realize I really do have it good.

My Mr. Sweetie Pants grandson lights up our world.  Do you hear me?  Precious & sweet.  Especially when he says,

“Grand, hold me.”

And stretches those little arms up.  Melts me.  Won’t be long until I have a grandbaby girl!  Of course she will be just as cute.  I have seen the sonogram pictures.  She is going to be a dandy!

Then, I have my kids & my husband who are so good to me.  Dirty dishes loaded in the dishwasher, by someone else than me.  Always a good way to make this mama’s day.  Not to mention, I have some of the kindest, dearest friends in the world.  My church family is exceptionally wonderful.  I have a good job & work with nice people.  I have the best big brother in the world.  My niece & nephew are the cat’s pajamas.  And my brother’s wife, she’s a good one to have on your team, too.  My Daddy is so kind & considerate.  He always makes time for us.  Those kids I have in my Bible class.  I so look forward to seeing them & spending time with them every week.  Some of the stuff they say just tickles me to death.  Blessed is what I am.

I’m so glad you came by to visit today.  You just remember, you are not alone in this world.  Life is a battle.  You may be going into battle, or coming out of one.  If things are going good for you.  Enjoy it.  Because problems rise up, when you least expect it.  The Lord is willing & able to comfort you & give you the peace of mind that nothing else can.  It’s been one more week.  I’m ready to see the weekend!  Come back & see me again soon.  As for me, I have to be going because I should be washing clothes.

What happens when a cat gets in the car

The other night my daughter –in- law called me. She & my son had just picked up Mr. Sweetie Pants. Of course it was from a fun filled night & day of candy kisses, games of Elefun, cooking at the play kitchen & other various & a sundry activities we are not allowed to speak of in hopes of keeping him out of trouble.

My daughter-in-law began telling me, “You know how ya’ll are always saying, take that cat with you? Well, we did, but we didn’t mean to!” Not long after that a knock came at the door & my daughter-in-law commenced to tell what happened. She said, “ I was putting the baby in the car & I guess she got in there then. We were going down the road & heard a meow. We looked around & there she was standing on the seat between us!”

Have you ever found yourself somewhere you didn’t plan on being? I mean, when you started out, you thought,

“Oh, this is a good idea.”

Over time, you realized,

“Yeah, really shouldn’t have done that.”

Then, you are stuck & don’t know how to get out of that situation. You may not have someone as good hearted as my daughter-in-law to bring you back home. First, be realistic. Know there are consequences to everything. Those consequences may not be great. However, I heard the motivational speaker Zig Ziglar put it the best, “If you are going to have to swallow a frog, you don’t want to have look at it too long.” Meaning, get you some gumption & take it like the big bad boy you were when you made that wrong decision.  Right your wrongs quickly.  Then, know you have people around you that love you & will help you. Don’t be afraid to admit your mistakes. The Lord uses both good & bad to make us who He wants us to be.

James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; v. 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. V. 4 But let patience have her perfect work that you may be perfect and entire wanting nothing.

Nothing is a better character builder than a good ol’ dose of humility. Take inventory of what it is you are supposed to be doing. Don’t let it damper your spirit. Everybody makes mistakes. Failure is not getting back up, once you fall down. So, get up, dust yourself off & hit the ground running. Pray about it all. Ask the Lord to give you strength & He will. Just like our sweet cat Pepper, you will be so glad to see the light of home!
I am so glad you came by today to visit with me. I hope you are getting back in the swing of things after the holidays. As for me, I have to be going because I should be washing clothes.

A little boy that could…..

Once upon a time a little baby boy was born.  1367A baby?? What are we going to do with a grandbaby?

1333His aunt said, I will feed him!  So, she did.

1393His aunt, Miss Neenee said, I will hold him.   So, she did.

1345Then, his other aunt, (whew! That’s a bunch of aunts!) said, all baby boys need to be so comfy they can stretch out their toes.  He needs to be comfy!  So, he was.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis baby turned one year old.  He was so happy!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This baby had the sweetest little heart.  Then, the doctors found out it was a special heart.  It had 3 tiny holes in it.  Well, that would never do.  The doctors said, “We have got to make this  heart, good, strong, & healthy”.  So, they did.

After that, the baby played & laughed & loved to be on his Aunt Neenee’s hip!  He was such a precious sight that no one could believe he had one more, teeny, tiny thing wrong.  One more time, the doctors said, “We have got to make sure this baby is perfectly perfect.”  So, once again, they did.  And that was today.  Mr. Sweetie Pants had another surgery.  And now, since God wants him to be big & strong & healthy He let him show the world the little strong trooper He meant for him to be.  Thank you God for healing this beautiful, loving, & delight of our lives baby boy.  (And his Grand-that’s me & Miss Neenee only cried a little.  By a little, I mean a lot. )

The end.

I John 4:7 & 8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God & knows God.  He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
